It must have begun in school, if i remember correctly. My friends, classmates everyone had initiated this right of passage into adult hood. I too had earned my adulthood in this manner, but the initial bitter taste was a shock to my senses. Even though i detested the taste it was important to assume that manly stance of liking this elixir of manhood and being a part of the crowd.
Growing up with drunkards, I realized one thing, people did continue to drink well after the right of passage. Now, I began to wonder why everyone around me is an alcoholic? In spite of the bad hangovers faced by almost every alcoholic, they still go back to it.
Looking at the statistics, the state beverages corporation located in various places are engaged in a tussle to break each other’s sales records. People boast of breaking the next towns record this festival season or such similar feats of alcoholic bliss. Peg counts and thebrand of alcohol are a major determinant of a person’s capacity.
What’s making people drink? Wine was even mentioned in the bible which makes our drinking habit as old as humanity itself. Brewing alcohol is a centuries old tradition. Do people enjoy the state of inebriation or do they want to forget their worldly sorrows and enjoy the company of friends and reduce the inhibitions of stable mind?
But not all cultures having a drinking tradition. Some ancient tribes did not have brewing technology and therefore were safe till they came in contact with the larger civilizations and their drinking habits.Whateer be the case there are more alcoholics around me now as I sit at the table sipping my beer.
